86680 Math and acting were equal opportunity offenders for Danica McKellar during her formative years, but it was the encouragement of friends and family members that prompted her to try putting her face in front of the camera for a living before burying her nose in a math book. After practicing acting in her free time with her sister at their mother's private studio, she began auditioning for commercials in 1986 and made her first television appearance in an ad for Volkswagen.
After a taste of television on two episodes of the '80s reboot of The Twilight Zone, Danica McKellar auditioned for the role of Gwendolyn "Winnie" Cooper on The Wonder Years in 1988. Originally penned as a character briefly crossing paths with Kevin Arnold, the chemistry between Danica McKellar and co-star Fred Savage prompted the writers to expand her role. With that, her place in the genre of angst-ridden TV was cemented, as she had a hand in every important event in Kevin's life over the course of the series.
